The 7 Most Common Fish Oil Side Effects (And How to Avoid Them)
You’ve probably heard about the health benefits of fish oil, but you also know about the fish oil side effects, because let’s face it: this almost has to be too good to be true, right?
That’s exactly what I thought when I was first began researching omega-3 essential fatty acids.
But I discovered something that surprised me, both in a good way, and in a bad way.
You see, most of the supplements out there are of low-quality and the fish oil side effects below are almost always caused by bad manufacturing and bad sources of fish.
The best way to avoid these fish oil side effects is to use a high-quality and proven pure fish oil supplement.
My mother, my father, my brother, my girlfriend, and I all take a high-quality omega-3 fish oil supplement on a daily basis.
One of the problems today is that most supplement companies overcharge for their fish oil supplements. I’ve seen prices upwards of $50 for a month’s supply.
I personally think that’s outrageous. I use a fish oil that costs me under $17 each and every month and it is the best I’ve found.
With all that said, let’s look at the possible fish oil side effects – and how to avoid them – shall we?
#1 – Heavy Metal Poisoning
It’s no secret that the oceans on our blue planet are polluted, and that most fish species are swimming in toxic waters.
This is why it is so important that you only get a fish oil supplement that has been proven pure and safe. Most companies don’t provide this information, so look for those that do.
By educating yourself, you will be able to avoid the fish oil side effects.
#2 – Diarrhea
The first few days of taking fish oil, you may experience diarrhea. I’ve never personally experienced or heard of this, but I have read about it.
When you start off, begin with a small dose to let your body get used to the omega-3 fatty acids.
Also keep in mind that the purer the supplement you use, the better it will be absorbed.
#3 – Medication
If you’re taking blood thinning medication or any other similar drugs, you should consult with your doctor before starting the use of omega-3 fatty acids.
The fish oil side effects can be severe if you mix them with the wrong kind of drugs. They are okay with most pharmaceutical medications, but it never hurts to be safe, right?
#4 – Itchiness
A common complaint people have is that they start experiencing itchiness all over their body.
This may be an allergic reaction. The same goes for if you develop hives or a rash. As well as if you have trouble swallowing and start wheezing.
If this starts happening stop taking the supplement right away and get in touch with your doctor. This reaction may be caused by something in the fish oil or the fish oil itself.
#5 – Weight Gain
Another complaint people have when they buy standard store-brought supplements is that they start going up in weight.
Determining the cause for this is hard, because it’s impossible to know if there are trace amounts of heavy metals or other toxins in the supplements you take.
The best tip I can give you is to not buy something from Walmart or from the supermarket, as those tend to be the worst in quality.
#6 – Fish Allergy
If you’re allergic to fish or seafood, you should be very careful about taking a fish oil supplement for obvious reasons.
Sometimes it may be okay, but you must consult with your doctor to check if it’s wise. Otherwise you should look for other sources for your omega-3 fats.
#7 – Heart Burn & Indigestion
Many complain about fishy burps as one of the most common fish oil side effects. They can usually be reduced by buying a properly purified fish oil supplement and/or storing your omega-3 fatty acid supplement somewhere cold.
I also recommend you take your supplement before you eat, as sometimes the food you eat may be causing problems, which makes it seem that the fish oil is the culprit when it really isn’t.
The Fish Stocks Are Getting Low
Another big concern I have when I choose my fish oil supplement is that many companies are depleting the fish from the sea, which means we’re slowly running out.
However, the company I use is Xtend-Life from New Zealand, and they make sure that they maintain a balance with the fish they take in versus the fish that is born.
Another side-effect of fish stocks running low is that companies have to fight to get enough fish, which means they often dilute their oils with other lower-quality substitutes.
Other than that, omega-3 fish oil supplements have been proven extremely safe by clinical trials and scientific research that has been done for decades.
The only problem is when you buy a low-quality product that can contain rancid fish oil, heavy metal, and other toxins.
The Supplement My Family And I Have Been Taking For Years
I know there’s a lot of products out there, and a lot of people that want to sell you their stuff, so I thought I’d mention what I use, because I’ve been through a lot of bad products myself, and I’ve wasted a lot of money.
The most important factors for me are price, effectiveness, and safety. It’s hard to find all three, but a company in New Zealand does it.
They’re called Xtend-Life, and I take their omega-3 fish oil supplement every day. I also take their multivitamin, which is amazing, but let’s stay focused, shall we?
I hope you enjoyed the article, and I wish you an amazing day filled with pleasant surprises!
